Put out a new suet feeder and a blue jay showed up within 20 minutes

I've been trying to attract more variety to my backyard for months, so I grabbed a wire suet cage from Ace Hardware on Saturday. A blue jay landed on it before I even finished refilling my coffee. Has anyone else had a bird show up faster than you expected after changing something small?

What kind of suet did you put in it? I've had blue jays ignore straight beef fat for weeks but show up same day for a berry blend or one with peanuts. Also, is the feeder near any trees or bushes they could use as a lookout point?

And that's the thing with blue jays, they're like picky eaters at a buffet who suddenly decide the coleslaw is gourmet. I think the whole berry blend thing is just a symptom of a bigger pattern I've noticed with birds and people both. Everyone claims they want the simple, basic stuff, but then they see something with berries or peanuts and suddenly the plain fat is boring. It's like how folks say they want a plain black coffee but then order a caramel macchiato with extra whip. The feeder is by a big oak tree, which I thought would be perfect, but the jays just stare at it from the branches like they're waiting for room service. Maybe they're holding out for the good stuff, same as my neighbor who won't eat store brand cereal even when it's the same thing.
