Rainy Tuesday last week turned me into a blue jay fan
I always thought blue jays were just noisy bullies that chased the smaller birds off. Last Tuesday it poured all morning and I almost didn't go out to refill the feeder near my porch. While I was out there soaked, a blue jay landed three feet away and just watched me. It didn't squawk or dive at me, it just stood there dripping wet and let me pour seed. Now I actually look forward to seeing them show up around 6:15. Has anyone else had a bird surprise you like that?

A pair of cardinals showed up at my window feeder right during a hailstorm last spring, both of them just sitting there puffed up like they had nowhere better to be. They stayed for a solid twenty minutes while the ice bounced off the glass, and I remember thinking maybe birds aren't as simple as we make them out to be. Now I make sure to keep the feeder stocked during bad weather, because that moment changed how I see the whole yard.

That moment with the cardinals gives me chills. Beautiful.

A soaked blue jay just watching you pour seed? That's wild. I've had them screech at me from the power line but never just sit there dripping like that. @the_emery probably knows exactly what you mean about those quiet moments (and I totally get why you look forward to 6:15 now).
