That bird call app I mocked for months actually saved me last Sunday
I always thought those bird identification apps were just for tourists fumbling around with their phones, but I downloaded one out of sheer frustration trying to figure out what kept waking me at 4:30 AM. It picked up a weird descending whistle I'd been hearing for weeks and identified it as a Swainson's thrush, which I'd never even heard of before. Has anyone else had an app change how you hear the morning chorus, or am I just late to the party?

I downloaded one of those apps last spring after a mystery bird kept dive-bombing my tomato plants at dawn. It helped me figure out it was a mockingbird just messing with me, which was honestly a relief. The app changed my whole morning walk route because now I actually stop and try to ID what I'm hearing instead of just zoning out.

@sarah_patel25 it's wild how these little apps make you notice patterns you just walked past for years.

kellys78 brought up the mockingbird thing, but heres the real spooky part. Those apps can pick up bird calls your own ears literally cant hear anymore, so you're basically using it to tune into a whole hidden layer of the morning.

Stop it, a mockingbird was dive bombing your tomatoes? That's insane, I thought those guys just copy sounds. I can barely get my cat to stop scratching the couch, let alone fight off an actual bird.
