That squirrel deterrent I saw this morning actually worked

I was out at 6am with my coffee and watched this one squirrel do its usual acrobatics to get to my nyjer feeder. Then a neighbor walked by and said he uses a slinky around the pole, like a snake, and the squirrels just give up. I grabbed an old slinky from my kid's toy bin and put it on last night. This morning, no squirrel, and the goldfinches were all over it. Has anyone else tried something weird that actually kept the little rascals off?

Did you try greasing the pole first?

Wait, you actually greased the pole? Like with real grease? I thought you were joking when you said that earlier, but now I'm imagining you out there with a tub of axle grease and a ladder. What kind of grease did you use, anyway? That sounds like it would make a huge mess and probably ruin your clothes.

Honestly, the key is a multipurpose lithium grease in a spray can, not axle grease. Ngl, @leodavis, I tried the spray stuff first and it worked way better than I expected because it doesn't drip everywhere. Just gotta hit the pole from a few angles and let it sit for a minute before you slide down - makes a huge difference for grip on the way up too.
