Appreciation post: My boy got the wiring right on his first try

I've been letting my kid watch me do small jobs around the house. Yesterday he asked to help with a new ceiling fan in the living room. He remembered which wires go together from when I showed him last time. We hooked it all up and it ran quiet on the first switch flip. I could see he was really proud of himself. It's neat to share this stuff with him. Maybe he'll want to learn the trade one day.

My youngest is about that age where he wants to help with everything (which is great, but also means a simple task takes three times longer). Watching them actually remember what you showed them and get it right is such a cool feeling. It makes all the patience totally worth it. That pride on their face is better than just finishing the job yourself, you know? Good on you for taking the time to show him how things work. Stuff like that sticks with them.

You might see it that way, but I have a different take on kids helping out. All that extra time adds up and can make everyday chores feel endless. That proud moment is nice when it happens, but it doesn't always balance out the frustration. What about when you're just trying to get dinner on the table and everything becomes a lesson? Teaching them is important, but so is getting through your day without losing your mind. Maybe it's okay to say not right now and handle things yourself sometimes.

I read that letting kids help, even when it takes longer, builds real confidence in them.
