Just realized I've installed exactly 1,000 GFCI outlets in my career, which feels weirdly poetic for a safety device.
Hit that number yesterday rewiring a 1970s kitchen in Spokane, and it made me wonder if any of you have a specific, oddly satisfying count you've kept track of over the years.

Ever keep count of something you fixed?

Keeping count would just make me sad. Every time I fix something, two more things break. It's like a magic trick, but the only thing disappearing is my free time. Why would I want a list of all the stuff that's tried to fall apart on me? The total would be scary.

Remember my buddy's old truck? He tried keeping a fix-it log in the glove box. One page said "replaced alternator" and the next week he wrote "passenger window motor" and "tailgate latch." He showed me the list after a month and it was just sad, like a diary of things giving up. He ripped it out and said counting the losses made the truck feel cursed. Now he just fixes stuff when it breaks and tries to forget.
