Question about using aluminum wire for a 30-amp circuit

My old boss, Frank, told me to never use aluminum wire for a 30-amp dryer circuit, but a guy on another job said it was fine and cheaper. I tried it in a rental unit last month to save maybe $50 on materials. The connection at the terminal got so hot after a week it melted the insulation. Frank was right (of course). Has anyone else had a close call with aluminum on smaller circuits?

I used to think the cost savings were worth it too. Seeing that melted terminal block in person changed my mind for good. The risk just isn't worth the few bucks you save.

Switched to copper, no problems since.

Copper is a total pain to keep clean, though. That green patina gets on everything. Stainless might have its issues, but at least it doesn't turn your hands colors. Seems like trading one set of problems for another.
