I keep seeing techs skip the basic continuity test before they even open a device

Had a guy bring in a laptop that wouldn't power on last week, and he said two other shops told him the motherboard was fried. I grabbed my Fluke meter and checked the AC adapter jack first. Zero continuity on the center pin. It was just a $5 DC power jack, not a $300 board. I replaced it in twenty minutes. Why do we jump to the hardest fix first? Anyone else find this is the most common time-waster?

Two other shops missed a five dollar part? That's just... how does that even happen?

How can you not start with the power jack? It's the first thing I check every single time. Skipping that step is just lazy work, and it costs the customer so much money. Those shops probably just wanted to sell a big repair. Makes the whole industry look bad when people do that.
