I used to just yank on ribbon cables to disconnect them... until I killed a $150 logic board last month.

Honestly I've always just pulled them straight out. You just have to grab them by the connector ends, not the ribbon itself. Never had a single issue in years of fixing laptops.

Wait, what about the ones with the little locking flap, @jamesf41? I always lift that first before pulling the connector.

But what about the really thin flat cables? @anthony129 is right to lift the flap, because just yanking those can tear the ribbon ends right off. I've seen it happen and then you're stuck replacing the whole cable.
