Serious question, who actually uses hot air rework stations for small SMD caps?

I had a guy in a discord server tell me last week that I was wasting time using soldering tweezers for 0402 caps and that hot air is faster every time. Tried it on a dead laptop board and blew a whole row of resistors off the other side of the board. Maybe I just suck at directing the airflow but has anyone else had trouble switching?

Blew a whole row of resistors off? That's rough, man. Hot air is definitely fast but you gotta mask off the other side with Kapton tape or something before you go blasting. Tweezers are way safer for tiny stuff unless you god-tier with airflow control.

Kapton tape is good but you can also use aluminum foil in a pinch if you're desperate, just make sure it's grounded. Tweezers + good magnification are really the way to go for tiny passives, once you get the technique down it's hard to mess up.

Dude @grace89 is spot on, I did the exact same thing my first time trying hot air on a tiny board. Masking tape is a lifesaver, I learned that the hard way after my resistors went flying too. I'm sticking with tweezers for 0402s now, just feels way more controlled.
