Heard a building manager say hydraulic elevators are 'obsolete' and should all be replaced with traction. Had to bite my tongue.

My 1970s Otis elevator runs smoother than any new traction unit I've seen.

Man that must have been tough to sit through! Hydraulic elevators still have plenty of life left in them, especially in the right buildings. Sounds like that manager was just repeating something they heard without really knowing the details.

Totally agree with @adamthompson about those older Otis units, they really knew how to build them back then. Had a buddy who managed an old office building and their hydraulic was still going strong after 40 years with just basic upkeep. The manager in the original post was probably just trying to sound smart without actually knowing what they were talking about.
