Rode an elevator from 1962 last week and the mechanic who maintained it for 30 years showed me something wild

There's something about physical objects like that - they hold time in a way digital stuff just can't. The elevators in my building have a keyhole in the panel that nobody seems to notice, but there's probably decades of repair history locked in there too.

Buddy of mine used to work in an old office building downtown. The elevator still had the original brass call buttons with actual metal push plates. One day an old mechanic showed him a hidden panel in the ceiling. Inside was a handwritten log book from the 1970s where guys recorded repairs by hand with fountain pens. Wild stuff still hiding in plain sight.

Oh man, that's wild! I mean, @the_xena is totally right about that keyhole thing. My old building had a weird little keyhole by the fire alarm panel, and someone told me it used to be for a time clock where the janitors would punch in. It's crazy what gets left behind. The fountain pen thing especially gets me, like imagine taking the time to write out "replaced cable, 3:45pm, signed - Dave" with an actual ink pen. Just feels like a whole different world.
