Talked to a retired mechanic in Pittsburgh who made me rethink my maintenance logs
He said he never wrote down more than a sentence per job because too much detail buries the important stuff. That hit me because I've been filling out two-page reports on every hydraulic unit I touch and it's eating up my evenings. Has anyone else found a simpler system that actually works?

Man that Pittsburgh guy knew what he was talking about. I used to write these long detailed reports too and half the time I'd just be repeating myself. Now I just jot down the one weird thing that happened or the fix that was different from usual and call it a day.

Wait, you actually used to do detailed reports before?

Honestly that "just the one weird thing" approach is gold. A buddy of mine used to do full page reports on every server issue at his old job. Now he just writes down the one weird error code and what fixed it and his boss is actually happier with the shorter stuff.
