Had a chat with an esthetician friend that flipped my whole routine around

I've been doing the same double cleanse routine for like 2 years now, thinking I had it down. My friend Maya who works at a spa in Austin told me I was probably stripping my barrier by using the same foaming cleanser both times. She explained the first cleanse should be oil-based to break down makeup and sunscreen, then a gentle second cleanse. Honestly I tried her method with a $12 oil cleanser from Target and my skin stopped feeling tight after a week. Has anyone else made this switch and noticed a difference?

Funny, I actually had the opposite experience. @wendyprice I hear you on the coconut oil disaster but for me switching to a foaming cleanser for both steps was what finally fixed my skin. I tried the whole oil cleanse thing for a few months after hearing all the hype and it just left my face feeling greasy no matter what product I used. My skin is already oily so adding more oil felt wrong and sure enough it made me break out more. Different skin types react totally different to this method so I don't think one routine works for everyone.

Love that for you. I had the same wakeup call with oil cleansing too.

Wait are you serious? I had the exact same thing happen with oil cleansing! I thought I was being so smart using straight up coconut oil on my face every night and then wondering why I was breaking out like crazy. Took me way too long to realize my skin just cant handle that stuff. Now I use a proper oil cleanser thats actually formulated for faces and it's a total game changer. My skin feels soft instead of greasy and I get way less little bumps on my chin. Feels so good to finally figure out what actually works after years of guessing.
