I thought my steam machine was fine on tap water for years

A client last month pointed out a weird white film on her face after a facial, and I couldn't figure it out. My mentor came by the next day, took one look at my steamer's reservoir, and said, 'That's mineral buildup from your hard water, it's coming out in the steam.' I switched to distilled water that same afternoon and the difference in skin clarity is huge. Has anyone else had this happen, and how often do you clean your steamer now?

Honestly seems a bit overblown to me. That film probably just wiped right off, right? How bad can tap water really be?

My friend's steamer left chalky dust everywhere...

What kind of water does your friend have? I had the same thing happen with my old steamer in an apartment with really hard water. That white dust gets on dark clothes and is a pain to brush off. Did it leave a film on their floors or furniture too?
