The whole 'less is more' thing with foundation keeps getting ignored by newer estheticians

I've been doing facials for about 12 years now, and I keep seeing newer folks pile on way too much foundation during makeup applications after a treatment. They think more product means more coverage, but it just settles into fine lines and looks cakey by noon. I learned this the hard way back in 2010 when a client in Dallas told me she looked like a porcelain doll that was cracking. Now I always start with half a pump and build up only where it's needed, like around the nose or on any redness. The skin underneath should still show through a little, that's what makes it look natural. Has anyone else noticed this trend with new graduates or is it just my area?

Porcelain doll that was cracking" is brutal but you're totally right, I used to overdo it until I saw it in daylight photos.

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I learned the same lesson after a night out when I was doing photos with friends on a sunny patio - my face looked like I had been hit with a paintball of bad foundation. @the_lee is spot on, that pasty ghost look in any natural light is just brutal. Now I keep a little handheld mirror at my desk to check before I head out.

My friend Angela used a full pump once and @wendy628 called it "face glue.
