Choosing between the old oak and the new development
Had a job in Greenville last fall where the client wanted a big, healthy oak removed to make room for a patio extension. I could have just taken the check and done the cut, but something felt wrong. I spent an hour showing them how to build around it, even drew a sketch on a napkin. They went with my idea, and now they have shade and a tree that'll outlive the patio. Ever talk a client into keeping a tree instead of cutting it down?

Man, I've definitely talked myself out of a paycheck a few times.

My first year in business, I lost three jobs for suggesting similar things. It feels good when a client actually listens and you can make it work.

Honestly, that's a nice story but it's not the usual deal. Most of the time, the tree is already a problem, like it's sick, damaging the foundation, or just in the absolute worst spot. You can't always build around it.
