PSA: The store brand dish soap I switched to wrecked my cast iron pan
I compared Dawn Ultra with the Save-A-Lot generic stuff for two weeks and the generic left a weird film that made my eggs stick like glue. Finally figured out the cheap soap wasn't cutting grease the same way, even though it says 'tough on grease' on the label. Has anyone else had problems with off-brand dish soap ruining their seasoning on cast iron?

Nah I gotta disagree about the salt and potato thing ray. That's a old school myth people still repeat but modern soap is fine for cast iron. The issue here isn't soap in general, it's the cheap stuff specifically. Dawn Ultra is actually great for seasoning because it cuts the polymerized oil without stripping it. I've used it for years on my cast iron and never had any sticking issues. The generic brands use different surfactants that leave residue behind, which is what ruins your seasoning over time. So the solution isn't to ditch soap entirely, it's to just stick with a quality brand that's actually formulated to rinse clean.

Wait, were you using the generic stuff regularly? I used to swear dish soap was dish soap, figured it all did the same thing. But that film you mentioned, I saw it too on my stainless pans. Never connected it to the cheap soap. Now I'm wondering if I messed up my parents' old cast iron skillet way back when I was using the dollar store brand.

Tbh my neighbor swears by using salt and a potato to clean his cast iron instead of soap at all.
