Question about whether that expensive meal kit service is worth the money

I signed up for HelloFresh back in February because I was tired of the same old dinners and thought it would save me time. After three months I tallied up the bills and realized I had dropped over $400 on meals that were only okay and still left me with a pile of cardboard boxes. Has anyone else done the math on these services and found a better way to break out of a cooking rut without breaking the bank?

The real hidden cost nobody talks about is your time dealing with the customer service when something goes wrong. I had a box show up late and warm, spent 45 minutes on hold trying to get a refund, and they only gave me a $10 credit. For the price you're paying, you should get a meal that doesn't require you to work customer support as a side hustle.

Pay the extra $5 a week for the veggie box even if you eat meat. Here’s why nobody says it: those meal kits box you into their recipes and their portions. I swapped to the vegetarian plan for a month and suddenly had leftover veggies to actually cook with, not just the exact amount of thyme for one dish. @amy974 hit the nail on the head about the hidden time cost, but the real trick is buying the box that gives you extra ingredients to riff on. Ended up using leftover kale and sweet potatoes from one kit to make a frittata for three days of breakfast. That stretched the value way more than any meat-heavy box ever did.

Admit that I spent so long trying to figure out the perfect meal kit math that I ended up ordering pizza twice a week just to give my brain a break.
