The light in the old laundromat made me stop rushing
I stopped at this 24 hour laundromat on Belmont Ave last Tuesday because my usual one was closed. The whole place had this weird orange glow from old fluorescent tubes and I swear it made the spinning clothes look like slow motion. I ended up just sitting there for 20 minutes watching a single load go through the whole cycle without touching my phone. Has anyone else had a random space just force you to slow down like that?

Hard disagree honestly. All those old lights do is make me feel like I need a shower and some eye drops. The buzzing gives me a headache after ten minutes and the orange glow just makes everything look dirty even if it's clean. Give me the bright cold white LED lights any day. I can get in and out fast and not feel like I'm trapped in a 1970s time capsule that smells like wet socks and old dryers. Places that never got updated usually just have broken dryers and sticky floors in my experience.

Are those old tube lights actually dimmer than the new LED ones? I swear they create a totally different atmosphere. The orange glow plus the hum they make is almost like a time machine. I have a similar spot in my neighborhood, an old diner that still has the same booths from the 70s. You walk in there and your phone feels wrong somehow, like you have to just sit and look out the window or stare at the menu for 10 extra minutes. There is something about places that never got updated that just demands you match their speed.

Man the buzzing thing gets me every time. Do you think it's the actual ballast noise or just some kind of low-key anxiety those places trigger? Like is it real or am I just conditioned to feel weird in old fluorescent light?
