Found my grandmother's recipe box in the attic last Tuesday, and one card changed my whole week.
It was for her 'Emergency Soup', a simple vegetable broth she made during a bad snowstorm in 1978 when the power was out for three days. Reading her notes about using what was left in the root cellar made me see that recipe as a story of getting by, not just a list of ingredients. Has anyone else found a family recipe that gave you a new view of a relative's life?

Is it weird how the most normal stuff in our houses can feel like a time capsule? I mean, I found my dad's old coffee mug with a chip in it and my mom told me he used it every morning during his first teaching job. It's just a mug, but now I see it as this little piece of his story. Makes you look at all the boring everyday things differently.

I always thought my grandpa's recipes were just old food, but his "depression cake" card changed that. It had notes about using vinegar instead of eggs, which made me realize how clever he had to be. Now I see his cooking as a history lesson.
