Grandma's cornbread vs my husband's cornbread was no contest

I grew up on my grandma's cornbread recipe from Alabama. It had sugar, buttermilk, and a whole stick of butter. My husband grew up in Texas on his family's cornbread which is just cornmeal, salt, and bacon grease. For 5 years I thought he was just being stubborn about his version. Then at our Thanksgiving last month I made both side by side and honestly, his was way better. The bacon grease gave it this crispy golden crust that my sugary version just couldn't match. What regional food differences have caused drama in your family?

Grandma's Alabama cornbread with sugar vs bacon grease. That crispy crust changes everything. Totally get it. My family had the same fight over potato salad - mayo vs mustard. Mustard won in the end.

Used to be team mayo all the way but you might be right about mustard.

Hold on wait, no sugar AT ALL in the Texas version? I mean, I get the bacon grease thing sounds amazing for the crust, but zero sweetness? That's wild to me. My grandma's cornbread was practically cake, I don't think I could handle the switch that fast.
