My grandma's biscuit recipe had a missing step that took me a year to figure out

She passed down her buttermilk biscuit recipe on a stained index card, but my batches always came out flat and tough. The card just said 'mix and bake', but I finally learned from my aunt that grandma always let the dough rest in the fridge for a full hour before cutting, something she never wrote down. It took me about twelve failed attempts over a year to finally ask the right family member. What's a secret step in one of your family recipes that got lost?

Is it really that big of a deal? My mom's meatloaf recipe card just says "mix everything" and I had to call her to find out she adds a splash of milk to the breadcrumbs. It took one try, not a year. I feel like some people make this into a huge mystery when you could just ask around sooner. Maybe your aunt would have told you if you'd asked about biscuits at the last family dinner.

But what if the person who wrote the recipe is gone? My grandma passed before I cared about cooking, and her pie crust note just says "enough water." I can ask my mom, but she doesn't remember the exact feel of the dough. That splash of milk or pinch of sugar dies with them, and no phone call can get it back. So you're left guessing forever, trying to match a taste from your childhood.

That "splash of milk" thing is so real. My dad's pancake recipe just says "stir until right," and I'm still chasing that perfect fluff.
