My grandma's pie crust recipe always came out tough until I switched from shortening to butter

I followed her handwritten card exactly, but for years my crusts were hard. Last Thanksgiving, I used cold butter instead of the vegetable shortening she listed, and the texture was completely different, flaky and tender. Has anyone else had a family recipe improve with a simple ingredient swap?

Hold on, that's actually kind of risky. Butter burns easier than shortening, so your grandma probably used shortening for a reason, maybe her oven ran hot. You might have just gotten lucky with your oven temp that day.
