My grandma's pie crust recipe had a hidden choice that almost ruined Thanksgiving
The recipe card from my grandma in Cincinnati says to use either 1/2 cup of ICE water OR 1/2 cup of chilled vodka. I picked the water because it seemed normal, but the crust was tough as leather. Turns out the vodka evaporates faster and makes it flaky, which was her real trick. Has anyone else had a family recipe with a weird ingredient swap that actually matters?

My aunt's meatloaf had a similar hidden swap.

Wait, what was the swap in your aunt's version, @the_max? Because a bad meatloaf swap can ruin the whole thing (trust me, I've had some bad ones). I'm guessing it was something like using turkey instead of beef.

Oh man, turkey for beef is a classic trap lol. It gets so dry. The worst swap I ever had was using those super lean ground chicken breast packs. Zero fat, so it turned into a dry, crumbly brick. You gotta keep some fat in there, or add a ton of wet stuff like grated zucchini or soaked bread. Even using pork sausage mixed in can save a lean meat.
