My grandma's 'secret' cornbread recipe had a surprise ingredient

I was making her recipe for a family dinner and realized I was out of buttermilk. I grabbed a container of plain yogurt from the fridge and used that instead. The cornbread came out way more moist and had a nice tang that everyone loved. I called my mom to tell her, and she laughed and said, "Oh, honey, that's what she used for the last twenty years, she just called it buttermilk on the card." Has anyone else found a hidden swap in an old family recipe?

Found the same thing with my mom's meatloaf. The card says "bread crumbs" but she'd been using crushed saltines for decades. Makes it way less dense. I only found out when I saw her doing it one day and she just shrugged like it was no big deal. I guess they just wrote down what sounded right at the time.

Wow, did you ever try making it with the bread crumbs to compare?

My grandma's recipe card says "cracker crumbs" but she always used stale bread. Guess they just used whatever was around.
