Rant: My grandma's secret ingredient for chili is a can of cola and I'm tired of pretending it's weird
Honestly, my whole family in Dayton has made chili this way for like three generations. Last week at a potluck, someone said adding soda was a 'crime against cooking' and it really got under my skin. The story goes my great-grandma started doing it during the Depression because sugar was scarce and it added sweetness and helped tenderize the cheap meat. I made a batch just yesterday with one 12-ounce can of cola in a big pot for six people, and the flavor is deep and rich, not sugary. Has anyone else got a family recipe that people side-eye but actually works perfectly?

Sounds like a solid family trick to me.
