That time I forgot the sugar in my grandma's pie...
I was at my aunt's house last Thanksgiving trying to make my grandma's famous apple pie from memory. Got the crust perfect, sliced the apples, mixed in cinnamon and nutmeg... walked away while it baked for 45 minutes. Pulled it out and it looked beautiful, but everyone took one bite and went silent. Turns out I left out the sugar completely... has anyone else had a recipe flop like that where you just stared at the dish wondering what went wrong?

I read somewhere that sugar does more than sweeten, it changes the texture and color of baked goods too.

Oh COME ON, sugar is totally overrated in pie! I've actually had unsweetened apple pie before and it lets the FRUIT flavor really shine through without that cloying sweetness covering everything up. Your grandma's recipe probably could've used like half the sugar anyway, most old school pies are way too sweet.

My friend tried making a sugar free pumpkin pie once for thanksgiving and it literally turned into a soggy mess that wouldn't hold together, it was like eating pumpkin soup with a fork
