The week my grandma's apple pie recipe almost got lost for good
My mom spilled coffee all over her old recipe box last Tuesday, and the card for her mom's famous sour cream apple pie was a total blur. We spent three days trying to remember if it was a cup of sugar or a cup and a half, and the first two test pies came out way too sweet. Has anyone else had to rescue a family recipe from a kitchen disaster?

Oh man, that's the worst! My aunt's biscuit recipe got splashed with bacon grease once. We called every cousin we could think of and compared their handwritten copies. Putting all the versions side by side on the kitchen table was what finally saved it, we spotted the common measurements.

Putting all the versions side by side is such a smart move. I read about a library that did something similar with old community cookbooks, where they'd scan a bunch of copies from different years to find the original version of a soup recipe that kept getting changed. It's wild how just one spilled ingredient can send you on a whole detective mission to get it back. Your kitchen table method is basically the home version of that.

Remember my grandma's gravy recipe, @clark.alex, where we had to track down her old neighbor to settle a paprika debate.
