I finally got why utility pockets are a big deal after a concert in Chicago

I was at an outdoor show in Grant Park last summer, and it poured rain out of nowhere. I saw this woman in front of me pull a compact rain poncho from a tiny, flat pocket on the side of her cargo pants. It wasn't bulky at all, just a smart little zip pouch. I was stuck with my phone in a wet back pocket, and my keys were digging into my leg. That moment made me think about design in a new way. It's not just about how clothes look, but how they work in real life. Now I'm sketching ideas for jackets with hidden, waterproof pockets for a transit pass or a mask. Has anyone else tried designing around a specific 'carry' problem like that?

Yeah, that's the real test of good design. My old coat failed it when my bus pass turned to mush in a surprise downpour. Now I just look for anything with a zip pocket that isn't obvious.

That zip pocket trick is a lifesaver, I keep a small plastic bag in mine just in case lol.

Honestly thought cargo pants were just for people who wanted to look ready for a hike to the grocery store. Seeing someone actually use that pocket in a real pinch was a total lightbulb moment. My old jacket has like six pockets but they're all basically useless for keeping things dry. Now I'm looking at every bag and piece of clothing wondering where the smart, hidden spot is.
