I used to avoid patterns completely until I saw a woman's coat in Portland last fall.
For years I only wore solid colors because I thought patterns looked too busy on me. Then I saw this woman with a wool coat that had these small, repeating geometric shapes in just two colors, navy and cream. I mean, it was so simple but it added way more interest than a plain coat. I've been trying to add subtle patterns like that into my own designs now. Has anyone found a pattern type that changed their mind about using them?

What kind of geometric shapes were they? Like small diamonds, or more like a tiny houndstooth? Trying to picture the exact vibe that made it work so well.

That "subtle patterns" thing is so true. I had the same moment with a striped linen shirt, it just looked crisp without being loud.

Was it the kind of linen that wrinkles in that nice, soft way? My striped one is great until I sit down for five minutes, then it looks like I slept in it! But I love that lived-in feel, it makes the stripes feel less perfect. It's like the pattern gets better when it's a little messed up.
