My professor in design school said my color palettes were 'too safe' and it made me switch from just neutrals to adding one bold, clashing color in every collection now.

After she pointed out my 2018 grad portfolio was all beige and grey, I started forcing myself to pick one wild shade, like a neon orange, to throw into the mix for contrast... does anyone else use a rule like this to push their work?

Honestly that sounds like trading one rigid rule for another.

It's not about rules, it's about having a real choice. MasonGonzalez had a point about the box, but breaking out of one lets you pick the next shape yourself. That feels like progress, not just a swap.

Sounds like you swapped one box for a slightly louder one.
