Question about pleated trousers and how I changed my view on them

I used to hate pleated pants until a tailor in London last month showed me how they actually hang better on my frame if the pleats are facing the right direction. Has anyone else had a tailor change their mind on a specific garment detail?

Did the tailor actually show you how the pleats should lay or was it more about the fabric weight? I had the same thing happen in NYC with a pair of double pleats. Reverse pleats changed everything for me, they just sit flatter.

What kind of fabric did you pick out? For me it was all about the pleat direction too. I had a tailor flip the pleats on my favorite pair and suddenly they didn't poof out at the hips anymore. Same trousers, just reversed the direction and they laid flat. Total game changer.

2 years ago I had a pair of wool gabardine trousers made by a guy in Chicago, and he told me the pleat thing is all about how the fabric falls on your body. I went with reverse pleats and a 12 ounce fabric, not too heavy. Your mileage may vary but for me the reverse pleats made a huge difference in how they hung. They just lay flatter around the hips and don't puff out like you described.
