Saw a dress go from flat to amazing just by changing the sleeve shape

I was working on a simple shift dress for a friend (just a basic cotton one, you know) and it looked kind of boring. I spent about two hours trying to fix it, but nothing worked. Then I switched from a basic set-in sleeve to a small, gathered puff sleeve. The whole thing just popped and looked way more fun. It went from looking like a nightgown to a real summer dress. Has anyone else had a simple change make that big of a difference in a project?

My friend had a plain skirt that just hung wrong, total dud. She added a single box pleat in the front, just one, and it completely changed the whole shape. It went from blah to her favorite piece in a snap.
