That seamstress in Portland mentioned bias tape is the wrong move for curved hems

I was getting a dress altered last week and she pointed out my homemade skirt had all the fabric pulling. She said bias tape only works for straight edges and I'd been using it wrong for years. Has anyone else wasted hours on technique that just doesn't fit the project?

Bias tape for curved hems? Nope. That's asking for trouble.

The last time I tried bias tape on a curved hem I ended up ripping it out three times before I gave up. I switched to a narrow rolled hem foot on my machine and it worked way better for my circle skirt. Took a little practice to get the fabric feeding right but once I got the hang of it the curves came out smooth. I also started using a lot more pins than I thought I needed and that helped a ton. If you're dealing with a tricky curve sometimes the simpler method really is the way to go.

Oh man, I feel this in my soul. Last time I tried bias tape on a curved hem my sewing machine literally ate the fabric and I had to fish bits of thread out of the bobbin case for twenty minutes. My cat watched the whole disaster like I was the dumbest human alive. Yeah no, bias tape is just a fancy way to make yourself cry on a Tuesday afternoon.
