I finally saw that old split-rail fence in the state park near Asheville

I was hiking in Pisgah National Forest last weekend and came across a section of split-rail that must be 50 years old. The crazy thing was, they used a double-saddle notch on the corners, which I've only seen in old books. It was holding up perfectly on that steep hill, with no concrete in the post holes at all. Has anyone here ever tried that kind of joint on a modern job?

I used to think like that, but seeing a real one changed my mind.

Is a fence joint really that big of a deal? It's just some old wood holding itself together.
