Rant: I was setting posts wrong for a decade and a client's driveway told me

I always used a level on the post itself, thinking that was good enough. Last week in Springfield, I saw a fence I put up six years ago, and the whole line had a clear lean. The driveway had settled a bit, and my posts followed the ground slope instead of staying true. The tip-off was seeing the gate post was a full two inches off from the house corner. I guess you have to set posts to a string line, not just the ground. Anyone else have a story about a job coming back to haunt them?

Two inches off after six years? That's a brutal way to learn.

My old boss taught me that the hard way last year.

Man, that's a tough lesson to learn. I spent a whole summer building a shed base that wasn't square, ended up fighting the walls for a week. Sometimes the ground just lies to you.
