That old timer on site told me to pre-drill all my post holes, glad I listened

Had a guy named Roy who's been building fences since the 80s tell me to always pre-drill post holes before setting them in rocky soil. I was on a job in West Virginia last August and figured I could skip it to save time. First three posts I tried to drive in came out crooked and took forever to level. After that I went back and pre-drilled all 12 holes, took maybe 20 extra minutes total but everything lined up perfect. Has anyone else had a seasoned guy save them from a headache with some simple advice?

Roy sounds like he knows his stuff. That pre drilling trick is legit, I had a guy named Chuck who's been doing concrete work since the 70s tell me to always wet the ground around the posts before setting them in clay soil. Told me it keeps the dirt from cracking and settling weird later. He was spot on, saved me from having to redo a whole line of posts that would have shifted after a rain. Stick with the old timers, they've already made all the mistakes so you don't have to.

Maybe, but sometimes you just gotta feel the ground and skip it.

Nah, feeling the ground is how you learn to skip it right.
