Why does nobody talk about the change in fence post digging?

I remember when all post holes were dug by hand (backbreaking, but solid). Now, augers are the norm, which is quicker but I worry about fences leaning sooner. Have you seen a difference in how long fences last?

Watch my neighbor's fence from 2003, posts set by hand with concrete, it hasn't budged an inch. Now look at the "auger special" they put up last spring down the street, it already jiggles if you lean on it. Those holes are so sloppy and wide they just dump a bag of mix in and call it good. It's like comparing the Leaning Tower of Pisa to something in a funhouse mirror.

So when those holes get too wide, does it just look bad or actually weaken the whole fence?

Eh, they all lean eventually anyway. Most fences still stand even with bad post holes.
