Spent a whole weekend trying to fix my tax withholding
I got a new job in March and the pay was higher, so I wanted to adjust my W-4 to avoid a big tax bill. I figured it would take an hour tops. I ended up going through the IRS calculator three times, reading old pay stubs, and trying to guess my side gig income. It took me about 8 hours over two days just to feel okay about the numbers I put in. Has anyone else had this much trouble just getting their withholding right?

My friend spent a whole day on that and still got it wrong.

Remember when I thought being fast meant you were good at something? I used to rush through problems and get them wrong. Then I saw a guy take three hours on a simple math puzzle, checking every step. He got it perfect. Now I see that taking your time, like your friend did, is often the smarter move. Speed just makes you mess up faster.

The real problem is the system expects us to be accountants. We have to predict side gigs, guess at deductions, and interpret vague worksheet lines. It's not about being slow or fast, it's that the form itself is a puzzle with missing pieces. They want perfect guesses on income that hasn't happened yet. No wonder it takes a weekend.
