Just realized I was looking at houses way above my real budget for months
I was checking listings in the $350k range because that's what the online calculators said I could 'afford' with my income. My friend who's an accountant asked to see my actual monthly spending, and we found I was forgetting about my student loan payment and car insurance. The real number I could handle for a mortgage was closer to $280k. I felt so dumb for wasting all that time on places I couldn't actually buy. Has anyone else had a budget wake-up call like that?

Honestly, I see that as time well spent. Looking at those higher listings gave you a clear picture of what you really want in a house. Now you know what features to look for within your actual budget. It's better to dream a little and then adjust than to just settle right away. You weren't dumb, you were just getting your hopes up before doing the hard math. That's a normal part of the process.

Susan649 is right, that's how you learn what you actually need.

Totally agree with that. I did the same thing when I was looking for a car, you know? I looked at all the fancy models first, which just made me notice how cramped the affordable ones felt. It helped me figure out that legroom was my big thing, not the sunroof.
