Overheard a couple arguing about their inspection report at the hardware store

I was grabbing some caulk at the local Ace and this young pair was going back and forth about a $15,000 quote for a new roof from their inspector. The guy was panicking about the cost, but his partner calmly said, 'The report says it's got 5 years left, that's our problem in 2027, not today.' It totally reframed how I look at those long lists of issues. How do you decide what's a deal-breaker fix versus a future-you problem?

Save the panic for when the roof is actually in your lap.

My grandma used to say the same thing, but she also had a basement full of canned beans from 1987. I mean, I get the idea, but my brain just starts planning the roof-in-lap speech for the news crew while I'm waiting. It's a whole thing. Maybe it's just me, but staying calm feels like another job on top of the possible storm. I end up doing weird stuff like counting how many canned goods I have, just in case.

Took that approach during a bad storm last year. Focused on moving stuff to the basement and checking the weather radar instead of freaking out. It kept my hands busy and my mind off the worst case stuff. When a tree did come down, we were already in the safe spot and ready to deal with it. How do you usually handle that waiting time before something bad might happen?
