Standing in the Lowe's paint aisle for 20 minutes trying to pick between Behr and Valspar for my first living room wall

I went with Behr because the color chip looked nicer under the fluorescent lights, and now my whole apartment glows like a dentist's office during a full moon, has anyone else had a paint decision backfire that bad?

Grabbed the same Behr shade for my bedroom and it turned my walls into a weird blue-ish gray that looks totally different at night. I swear the lighting in the store is designed to mess with your head. My advice is to buy those little sample jars next time and paint a big swatch on the wall. You'll save yourself a whole gallon of regret, trust me.

Start by grabbing a couple of different color samples from the same brand, not just one. @parker183 is right that lighting changes everything, but I noticed the paint's base color can shift even more depending on your primer underneath. I used a gray-tinted primer once and it completely changed how the Behr color looked on my living room wall. Sample jars are a lifesaver, but testing on different surfaces around the room helps too.

But sample jars lie too (different base formulas and all).
