I finally gave up fixing an old Maytag dryer after 4 attempts
That 2005 Maytag dryer at my duplex in Austin kept eating the belt every 2 months. Replaced the idler pulley twice, the drum rollers once, and even the motor. After the fourth fix lasted a week, I tossed it and bought a basic Amana for $380. Am I the only one who finally learned that some stuff just isn't worth the headache?

Nodding along with you so hard right now. I had a similar fight with a 2003 Kenmore washer that kept throwing its belt and burning out the pump, and after the fifth repair (I even replaced the control board, ugh) I finally gave up and bought a basic Speed Queen. Sometimes the cheap new appliance really is the smarter choice than sinking more time and money into an old headache.

After the fourth fix lasted a week" that's the part that gets me. I mean it's like life keeps telling you something and you just gotta listen eventually, some stuff is built to be thrown away and it's okay to admit that.

You know what, I used to be the person who'd say "they don't make 'em like they used to" and try to fix everything. But after watching my dad sink three years and probably more money than a new fridge costs into keeping his 90s GE alive, I finally get it. Sometimes that stubborn pride in fixing old stuff just ends up costing you more in the long run, both in money and sanity. I think you and faith_thomas are right - there's actually something smart about knowing when to let go and just get the new thing.
