Got told my plank stagger was too predictable on a job in Tempe

The homeowner pointed out the repeating pattern in my hardwood install, saying it looked fake. I switched to a random stagger using cut-offs from three boxes at once. How do you guys break up the pattern without wasting a ton of material?

That random stagger is the move. Pull from multiple boxes at the same time, like you did. Also, try to avoid any board end being within six inches of another in the same row. It uses more material but looks way more natural.

Remember when my buddy Mike tried to save cash by using only one box of flooring per row? His living room ended up with these weird, repeating patterns that looked totally fake. He had to tear up half the room and mix boxes to fix it. How much extra material did you end up needing to get that random look right?

My own floor looks like a bad magic eye poster because I skimped on boxes. Lesson learned the hard way.
