I was cutting my own underlayment for years before a guy in Tacoma showed me the trick
I was on a big laminate job in a split-level house, and I was doing my usual thing. I'd roll out the foam underlayment, cut it with my utility knife right on the floor, and tape the seams. It took forever and the cuts were never super straight. This older installer, Frank, was working on the other side of the house. He watched me for a minute and just said, 'You know, you can score and snap that stuff like drywall, right?' He took my knife, made a quick score along his straight edge, folded it over, and it broke clean. My mind was blown. I'd been wasting probably 15 minutes per room for years. I guess I just never thought to try it. Has anyone else had a simple trick like that change their whole routine?

Wait, you were cutting it all the way through every time? That's wild. I can't imagine how long that must have taken, and the blade wear alone sounds like a nightmare. It's one of those things you just assume needs a full cut because it's foam. Frank saved you a ton of time and money on blades.

Honestly thought the same as tylerj22, that you had to cut all the way through the foam. I used to press down so hard my hand would cramp up. Seeing someone just score and snap it was a total game changer, saved me so much time and frustration on my last few jobs.

My first boss had me cutting full sheets of underlayment with scissors like some kind of craft project. I spent an entire afternoon on one room, arms aching. Reading what harper_foster said about hand cramps brought that pain right back. It wasn't until I saw a YouTube video of a guy scoring it on a table saw stand that I felt like the biggest fool in home improvement. All that wasted effort for years because nobody showed me the simple way.
