Shoutout to the homeowner who asked if I could 'just patch' a 4x4 section of herringbone
This was in a 1920s house in Tacoma, and she was shocked when I explained the whole floor would need to come up to match the pattern. She said, 'Can't you just cut a piece and make it fit?' Anyone else run into this with complex patterns?

Oh man, that's rough. Honestly, I get why she'd ask, but that pattern is a total nightmare to match. Tbh, trying to patch herringbone is like asking someone to fix one piece of a puzzle after you glued it all down. You'd see that patch from space, no way it blends. Some people just don't get how much work goes into making things look that good in the first place.

Totally feel this. Watched a contractor try to blend a small section of herringbone flooring after a pipe leak. He had to pull up like three rows to make it look right, and even then you could spot the new wood's color in certain light. It's never just one piece.

Saw a DIYer try that once, total disaster.
