Why does nobody talk about how linoleum went from an actual craft to click lock junk
Remember when putting down sheet goods meant wrestling with a roll and hot-spot welding the seams. Now it's all floating planks with a foam pad underneath. Feels less like installing a floor and more like building a kids' puzzle. I miss the smell of that fresh adhesive. The new stuff doesn't even feel solid under your feet.

That click lock flooring is a real step down in quality, you know? If you miss the solid feel, try adding an extra layer of underlayment, but it still won't match old school sheet goods. Why did everything have to become so cheap? Make sure your subfloor is perfectly flat, or those planks will creak and shift. Sometimes I wonder if we lost more than we gained with these shortcuts.

Remember that weird chemical smell from the old adhesive? My parents' kitchen still has it, and the installer told me last year that smell meant it was locked down for good, which kinda makes sense with what @xenaf51 said about the subfloor. He said that solid feel came from it being glued to the slab, not just sitting on top. Now you just don't get that same permanent kind of connection.

Ever run into issues with the floor dipping near the wall? We had to pour self-leveler under ours before putting down the new planks... stopped most of the movement.
