A lady in Phoenix asked for a bouquet that smelled like her old cat

She came into the shop last Tuesday and said her cat, Mr. Whiskers, had a very specific smell she missed. She described it as 'dry food and sunshine.' I tried to be nice and suggested some herbs or maybe a scented geranium. She sniffed a few things, then looked at me and said, 'No, this is all wrong. He smelled more like a dusty couch.' Has anyone else gotten a request this wild?

See this all the time. People want to buy a feeling, not a thing. They miss a pet or a person or a time in their life. They think a smell or an object will bring it back. It never really works. The memory is stuck in their head, not in a dusty couch bouquet. Makes the whole job kinda sad sometimes.

Honestly, I'm stuck on how you even begin to source 'dusty couch' as a fragrance note. Did she want you to stuff some old upholstery foam in with the baby's breath? Some people just need a therapist, not a florist.

Sean, my friend once got "wet basement" as a request.
