Changed my mind about using only local flowers after a wedding planner's comment

A planner for a big event in Asheville told me my bouquets looked 'a little tired' because I only used blooms from my own garden... she was right, the dahlias wilted fast in the heat. Now I mix in some sturdy, shipped-in greens like leather leaf fern for every five local stems to keep things fresh. Has anyone else found a good ratio for blending local and bought flowers?

My zinnias always give up by noon, lol.

Wait, are you sure they're giving up? Zinnias just close their flowers in the heat to save water, it's normal. They'll pop back open when it cools down later.

That "a little tired" comment would have made me mad a few years ago. I was all about 100% local, no exceptions. But then I saw my own centerpieces droop by the cake cutting. Now I get it. I add in things like seeded eucalyptus or those tough supermarket carnations as a base. They hold up the pretty, delicate stuff from my yard so it all lasts.
